Newsletter 3/4/10: ONE WEEK UNTIL OUR SPRING SEASON!

Hey PHCA fans, friends, and associates,

…need…art…please…hurry…
If you can’t wait until next week, call me and I’ll map out a First Friday route for you. Seriously! And for the low low price of just one fine piece of art that you see along the way (I’ll give you a hint: it’s the big rotating heart in front of the MCA – seriously, imagine that as PHCA’s sign!).
So, yeah, thanks for asking, our new relationships are moving along nicely, we have a lot in common and oh my god are they each so cute and fun! We haven’t had our first quadruple date yet, but I’m imagining it’ll be just like the season finale of HBO’s Big Love – or like the end of Chuck Mee’s Big Love? Either way, should be a blast.
If you’re looking for a special someone to fulfill your art-viewing needs, see items 1 and 3 below. If it’s art-making needs you want to satisfy, check our Arts Classifieds: items 2, 4, 5, and 6. And if you want to become this arts organization’s special someone, see item 7!

3. Put your brain on red alert Our mind-blowing Spring Performance Season preview…
This is serious right here. We’ve got works that will shatter your consciousness into tiny little bits if you’re not properly fortified with a well-maintained tolerance for brilliant art. Regular viewing recommended. Watch (out/this)!

March 25-27, 8pm
MISSA POPULI (world premiere)
An original performance by Vicious Trap, directed by Eric Meyer and Kenny Storms
A reclaiming of the Catholic Mass—an exploration and undermining from within—dissected and rebuilt in the guise of performance and the name of humanity. Combining the sacrifice, transcendence, blood and circumstance of the original with history, live music, science, dance, literature and pop culture to find a wholly modern communion experience that is all human.

April 2-3, 8pm; April 3, 4pm
Aura Fischbeck Dance, Leigh Riley, and Syzygy Butoh
Hailing from San Francisco, Aura Fischbeck returns to Colorado with her company Aura Fischbeck Dance, along with The Riley Project, who will be making their Rocky Mountain debut. The two companies, who have co-produced and co-presented extensively in the Bay area, bring new and revisited contemporary dance works, investigating such themes as lost love, body politics, and silent films. This program promises a satisfying dose of athleticism, reflection, experimentation, humour, and artistry. They will be joined by local choreographer Nathan Montgomery/Syzygy Butoh.

April 22-24, 8pm
Demolition Queens (world premiere)
A performance spectacle by Control Group Productions, directed by Patrick Mueller
WHEN THERE’S NOTHING LEFT TO BURN YOU HAVE TO SET YOURSELF ON FIRE. Raze the debris of the glam-fashion-punk-pop-image-icon-anti-cult like a derelict high-rise of spent cultural currency. Then dance on the ashes. This isn’t dissection of super-stardom, just a glorious conflagration. PHCA’s permanent resident company has its finger on the detonator.

April 30-May 2, 8pm
Aleh (world premiere)
A Butoh dance performance by Sharoni Stern Siegel and ensemble
Solitude amidst motion, the fragility of the human spirit, sadness, and resilience. The collective cultural consciousness embedded in each body’s memory, excavated and explored. This piece draws on inspirations and imagery from art, poetry, nature, and our own dreams and visions, rendered in a unique blending of spiritual and cultural contents.

May 7-8, 7pm – 11pm
Stop. Crawl. Walk. Run.
A Multi-Arts Festival conceived by projectmedia in association with The Packing House Center for the Arts
A cultured chaos, interactive, multi-media event including visual arts, digital media, dance, fashion, music and artists of all types who come together in a vision to stir political, social, and personal observations about our constantly evolving world. Join these artists in an evening filled with stimulating creation where audience and art become one (like Voltron!). Ponder the walls that contain us and the freedom that breaks through as truth (like Kool-aid!). Stay home plugged into your digital box or join a vision that sets you free (like the Matrix!).

4. Ka-kaw ka-kaaawwww Auditions 2/27 and 3/6 for up-coming PHCA Co-Production MISSA POPULI
Vicious Trap has been developing MISSA POPULI, a devised performance aiming to deconstruct the Catholic Mass and reconstruct an entirely human experience within the old structure: combining the sacrifice, transcendence, blood and circumstance of the origin al with history, live music, science, dance, literature and pop culture. We are seeking actors and dancers who would have the interest to work with us in the final stage of the process – taking it from paper to performance. Rehearsals begin on March 8, with performances on the 25th, 26th and 27th of March. The process will be fast (three weeks only!), fun and collaborative.

Audition/interviews will be held on Saturdays, Feb 27 and March 6, from 11:00am-12:00pm. We are seeking all types, ages and skills. No prepared piece is necessary, but come prepared to move.

Contact Eric Meyer for more information or to secure an audition spot. Walk-ups are also welcome:

7. The Best Nation in the World See where your money, time, and used electronics can go
Progress, progress. We have three great new partners and are exploring further partnership opportunities as well. We’ve started looking at new locations, and, while we are still open to other possibilities, we are honing in on the RiNo (River North) Arts District as our preferred permanent home. This area carries the same spirit of urban, industrial history as our current digs, and combines it with a vibrant arts community that is producing what we believe to be the best visual arts in Denver. And what do they need to complete their district? An equally awesome performing arts center, of course.
We are moving forward with our 501c3 application (currently we can offer tax deductibility through our fiscal sponsor Fractured Atlas) and building our infrastructure administratively with the help of our interns and our part-time and volunteer staff.
There’s a lot of work all round, and we’d love all the help we can get, be it time, materials, or financial help. At the top of our wishlist right now:

-1023 Preparation Assistance: If you have experience with completing the application form for 501c3 status with the IRS, we could sure use a hand getting a hold of some of the required legalese and getting advice on strategy that will allow our charter to grow with us.

-Flash Video Recorder: We’re feeling a strong need to increase our documentation of the work we produce here, particularly in ways that can make footage available to all of you, if you have to miss a show. If anyone has recently upgraded to a Gen2 Flash video camera, or has $200+ to put toward a snazzy new one, well, hook a brother up!

-Track Lighting: We’re slowly expanding our lighting capabilities here, and the next item on the list is some mini Parcans for lighting art and creating spot-lighting for performances. With our without plugs, we can wire them to suit our purposes.

-Ushers: We’re instituting a Volunteer Usher program that offers you the chance to see any of our public events for free in return for helping us at the door. Look for more info soon on our website; in the meantime, if you’re interested in ushering, send an email to patrick@controlgroupproductions.org with your name, contact info, and the date/time/show you’d like to usher.

And here’s the almost full list (feel free to think of other things we need that aren’t on our minds yet but should be):
-Folding Tables (for cafe-style set-up at up-coming events)
-Outdoor planters (for entry-way aesthetics)
-Outdoor bench (aesthetics + comfort)
-Shelving (for storage)
-Storage Bins (ditto)
-Power Tools (for renovations and building projects)
-Computer (one or two newer machines for administrative and design work)
-Photoshop or Design Suite for Mac
-Microsoft Office Suite for Mac
-Credit Card reader (for box office)
-Digital Projector (for projecting, silly!)
-Plywood and boards for risers, flats, and sundry construction projects

-Moolah!!: And of course we’re always delighted to accept financial donations!
