ALONE WITH TODD

the third creation in the series
dances made to be viewed in the dark

Created by Control Group Productions

Performed by Todd Bilsborough (sound), Patrick Mueller (embodiment), and Ben Waugh (physical/technical operation)

There's a thing that happens in the darkness – a loss of clarities, an enveloping surreality, a dislocation of self.

Darkness is a lack – of light, of grounding, of the permanence of the world around us. Once the solid foundation is gone, what differentiates relief from deprivation, solace from isolation?

Using darkness as a gathering point, this performance unfolds a veteran's post-deployment homecoming experience...

In 2006 Todd Bilsborough returned home from combat deployment in Iraq to the darkest period of his life. This work tracks this trajectory, from the overwhelming stimulation of combat through the disorienting act of return to the empty space that follows. Focusing on the direct sensory experience of preparing for and engaging in the practice of war, ALONE WITH TODD offers a moving meditation on the act of being in the world.

Ultimately, it faces the question: what is a person alone in the dark?
