Neverhome: August - September, 2017

We’re always leaving,

Almost always arriving;

Never finding home.

A walking tour with site-specific performance by Control Group Productions

When we come untethered from place, we lose our traction on the earth. We float and drift, the still center of a world fracturing and flying around us. Neverhome is a rumination on the act of migration, the experience of displacement, and the impermanence of place in a volatile world. Through a framework of simple actions, images, words, and sound, the work takes audiences on a journey (literally) in pursuit of a new place where they can take root.

Without certainty of perspective or message, Neverhome reflects gently on the Middle East refugee crisis, immigration across the southern border, our region’s history of westward expansion, and the effects of the Denver metro’s current torrent of emigration. It also incorporates imagery of bird migrations, wilderness travel, and the simple human companionship. Through crystaline moments of flying and floating, the journey embraces the experience of transience of both place and self. Neverhome is a walking tour of various areas in the Denver metro area. Each route involves a ca. 3/4-mile walk along ADA compliant sidewalks and paths. Each site brings a unique flavor and focus to the work.
