Artist Residency Program

Control Group Productions is committed to producing at our theater new works by other artists and companies that invigorate the local arts culture through innovation, experimentation, and artistic excellence.

Residencies are available to emerging and established artists of all genres, from the local community and around the country and the world.

Our criteria for consideration revolve around the potency of the proposed exploration and its potential to impact the development of ideas in the local arts and audience communities, as well as an assessment of how the residency will aid the artist’s development.  In most cases, we are interested in facilitating young and emerging artists who can benefit exceptionally from a comprehensive rehearsal/performance residency.  Among other things, we value inter-genre collaborations, non-traditional genres and processes, and works that engage the specific physical space of the venue in exciting ways.

Currently the Artist Residency Program  is structured to assist artists to have an integrated, streamlined, fulfilling process without upfront financial burden.  As a young arts organization, our financial situation prohibits us from offering stipends, travel assistance, or other major financial benefits to residents.  We are committed to making the artistic process affordable, and we work to help residents find additional funding sources to support their work.

RESIDENCY AWARDS: Residencies usually spans two to three months and include:

:Free rehearsal space up to 10 hours/week (flexible to specific situations).
:A fully-produced performance run of 1-2 weekends / 3-6 performances.

:print advertising materials and assistance with digital marketing and publicity efforts.

In return, we have the following expectations of our residents:

:The bulk of the process occurs during the residency.
:The work is premiered here.
:Residents provide front-of-house staff for performances.
:Residents design and distrib promotional materials, and distribute promotional materials after we print them.
:Residents must offer some form of sharing with the community: open rehearsal, mid-process showing, etc.
:Residents must offer some form of educational giving back, such as holding workshops or weekly classes.
:Initial proceeds from performance admission and classes are used to off-set costs.

APPLICATION PROCESS:  The residency application process is informal and we’re interested in letting it develop through our conversations; but we’re also interested in seeing a clear intention to do a specific project.  This clarity doesn’t need to encompass all aspects of the project.  Instead, we’re interested to hear in your own words where the project is coming from (artistically), where it’s going (it’s intention, the exploration driving it, etc), what it’s scope is, what you already know about it and what you don’t.  Again, this doesn’t need to be polished, and we don’t want you to try to make decisions or create clarity that isn’t there yet.

The general process is:  put a proposal together (usually in written form, although we’re also open to other formats) and pass it along to us.  Our staff will look it over and we’ll set up a time for one of us to get together with you and discuss it.  If it seems like a good fit for the program and our mission/goals/intentions, we’ll bring it back to the full staff and discuss its merit and its viability from our side (in terms of its alignment with our values and goals, and our ability to support it satisfactorily).

We accept proposals on a rolling basis, but the initial proposal should come several months (preferably 3-5) before the desired start-date.  This gives us time to fully process the proposal and schedule it.

Please contact Patrick Mueller (patrick.w.mueller@gmail.com) with proposals. We accept submissions on a rolling basis, and we encourage interested parties to contact us with ideas at any stage of development in order to begin a dialogue about the work.
