Hold on to what is good, even if it is a handful of earth.
Hold on to what you believe, even if it is a tree which stands by itself.
Hold on to what you must do, even if it is a long way from here.

To be alone with sublimity and the divine... The wilderness is an intensely personal experience. For most of my life I’ve struggled with how to bridge the privacy of this with the communal experience of art. I’m still uncertain exactly how this looks, but… it’s time to try everything we can.
Treeline will span the next several years of Control Group’s creative practice. In it we seek to come to some kind of terms with the changing relationship between humans and Nature in the Anthropocene era. Projects in the series will take guests into areas wilderness, and bring wilderness to audiences, in pursuit of sublime experiences and concrete actions we can take individually and as a community.
Treeline will seek to transmute intensely personal relationships with Nature into communal experiences that deepen participants’ sense of connection and responsibility to the land they stand on.
Framed by science, historical research, social engagement, and experiential artistic practice, Treeline will work toward re-envisioning the balance between survivalism, sublimity, and stewardship.
Ideas in development, and how to get involved.
We're exploring sites for video and live event activities – wildfire burn scars, wildland-urban interface spaces, near-city wilderness and unexpected in-city nature pockets... Please reach out if you have ideas or want to take a hike with us!
We're also pursuing residencies in several National Parks and other wilderness areas, and partnerships with administrators of local public and private lands. We'd love contacts and site recommendations.
Our current reading list:
Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey
The Earth Path by Starhawk
The Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi
Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdrich
Permaculture: A Designer's Manual By Bill Mollison
An Indigenous People's History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz
We'd love further book recommendations!
We're still building our artistic team for this project, with attention to how we work together through the pandemic. Please reach out if you're interested in working on Treeline.
We're fundraising for this project. If you'd like to donate, here's how.
